While my wife and I love to travel with the kids, there is nothing like a 3–4 night getaway together.
Over the years we have had some great times across the Caribbean or skiing in Canada. We never go for more than 4 nights and really don’t ever need more time. Our joke is the minute we are in the car to the airport we are on vacation. If you are a parent you understand!
Anse Chastanet/St. Lucia
If I could go back anywhere this would be the place. With two incredible beaches, really nice snorkelling, top notch customer service and unbelievable food, you seriously cannot go wrong with a getaway to this amazing resort.
One of the really cool features is the second beach they have access too, Anse Mamin. My wife and I regularly swam over, but you can hike there as well. There was a chef working the grill and it was quite laid back, and the food was fantastic. If a cruise ship is in then this is the beach you want.
The resort is built on an old chocolate plantation so make sure to take the tour and you can also ride mountain bikes on a course they designed.
If you have an appetite to spend even more, then Jade Mountain, which sits atop Anse, is quite amazing. We took a tour and were quite impressed.
Finally, the view of the Pitons, a UNESCO world heritage site, are incredible. If you are able, the hotel will arrange a day trip to hike up one of them — this was pretty cool.
Enjoy and say hi for me!
I will admit I kind of screwed up on the hotel choice. We stayed at the Fairmont Southampton, and while definitely not a bad place to stay, it was crowded and loud and we just wanted some quiet. We were on a babymoon and looking to spend some time together. There is a bit of a walk to the beach and the restaurants are overpriced.
But…. Bermuda is stunning and another spot I would return to in a second. The Island is encircled by multiple reefs, and even though you are in the Atlantic ocean, the water is crystal clear and warm. The snorkelling was ok, but it was so nice to swim in that amazing water.
On the plane over a very nice woman told us about the Reefs, so we headed there for dinner the first night. The food was amazing and so was the view. We ended up there a few more times and just loved the whole environment, the service, the view and of course the food.
Bermuda is high end and therefore if you can get a deal at a boutique hotel like the Reefs to include breakfast and dinner, I highly recommend — that was one of the mistakes I made. I was so excited about the deal I got on the hotel I didn’t concentrate on the cost of meals.
Besides exploring tropical islands, we also love to ski. If you are from the west coast you probably will ignore this and not understand how we can stay east and ski. I get it, I have been out west before, but there is something special about skiing in Mont Tremblant.
Quebec is our Europe in Canada. You truly feel as though you are in France, from the food to the attitude. The skiing in Mont Tremblant is superb and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. There are enough slopes so it is easy to avoid the front of the mountain and ski without the crowds.
I would highly recommend staying in one of the condos up the hill, there is a shuttle across the whole resort. Staying in the village can be noisy and crowded, but there are some higher end hotels, the Fairmont in particular, that are quite nice.
Finally, head out of the village for dinner to what used to be called St. Jovite. Head to Cheval de Jade, we have been going since it opened and is delicious French food and run by the nicest french couple. Enjoy!
